Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography Applied to Diesel and Biodiesel Analysis
There are limitations to current methods.
  • Combined methods are often necessary for groups and sub-groups quantification
  • LC separations are time consuming, require high quantity of solvents and higher sample amount need to be injected compared to GC separation
  • MS quantification requires repeated calibration steps
  • Conventional GC and 2D-GC methods cannot be applied over C12

Alternative approach with GCxGC separation and quantification of groups as Saturates, Mono-aromatics, Di-Aromatics, Tri-aromatics

  • Detailed group-type separation and quantification by number of carbon atoms
  • FBP can be extended to 400°C (up to n-C30)
  • Generation of distribution plots per group and per number of carbon atoms
  • FID quantification for reliable results and easier procedures

GCxGC is a powerful separation technique for the characterization of complex Diesel and Bio-Diesel samples. A method for automatic data processing and reporting for detailed group analysis of middle distillates has been implemented in Thermo HyperChrom Data system. Quantitative results for main groups have been demonstrated to be in very good agreement with conventional methods. GCxGC-FID generates reliable and highly repeatable quantitative results. GCxGC is particularly suitable to characterize Bio-Diesel samples, delivering "added value" determination of the origin and type of FAME.
