A review of the environmental applications of
sector-field ICP-MS was recently published in the Royal Society of Chemistry's
Journal of Environmental Monitoring. The review, by Austrian Scientist, Michael
Krachler, discusses the reported applications and advantages of the technique as
applied to the analysis of water, seawater, ice and snow, biological fluids and
tissues, plants and peat, soils, sediments rocks and particulates.
The major benefitsof the technique, as described in the
paper, include extremely sensitive analysis for ultra-trace detection
capability; the ability to physically resolve many adjacent interferences by
virtue of high mass-resolution, giving improved accuracy in the often complex
matrices found in environmental analyses; the ability to measure isotope ratios
with improved precision when compared to quadrupole ICP-MS; and the ability to
measure linearly across 12 orders of magnitude when the latest generation of
detection systems are used.
