ICP-MS has long been used for the measurment of trace elements in various types of environmental samples, but it has not been approved for the measurement of water samples taken to check compliance with discharge permits issued as part of EPA's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
EPA recently announced that the technique, and more specifically the methods EPA 200.8, AOAC 993.14 and ASTM D5673 are now fully approved for the analysis of samples in compliance with permits issued under the NPDES.
