 European Methods for Environmental Analysis

Unlike the US system, there are no specific prescribed or approved analytical methods for regulatory drinking water analysis. All methods used must, however, be proven to meet the preformance requirements set out in the relevant EC directive and/or member state translations of the legislation.

Techniques used for analyses include AA, ICP and ICP-MS. ICP and ICP-MS are more common in typical European environmental labs beacause their multi-element analysis ability allows more efficient operation. ICP provides a very robust technique that is excellent for handing dirtier samples at higher concentrations, for example wastewaters and soil digests. ICP-MS is excellent for cleaner work requiring the lowest detection limits, drinking water analysis for example.

ICP methodology suitable for this purpose includes the ISO method 11885 and ICP-MS methodology includes the ISO method 17294. These can be purchased from the ISO website.
