Hazardous Waste and Contaminated Land Assessment Analysis
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), 1980, created the Superfund program to assess and deal with hazardous waste and contaminated land. Analysis under this program is performed by EPA’s contract laboratory program (CLP). CLP labs follow detailed statements of work (SOWs). The SOW for metals analysis detailed in ILM05.3 (soon to be ILM06.x) and uses both ICP and ICP-MS. ICP is used for analysis of air filters, wipes, soils/sediments and aqueous samples, while ICP-MS is used for soils/sediments and aqueous samples. CV-AAS is also used for mercury analysis.
See http://www.epa.gov/superfund/programs/clp/index.htm for more information on the Superfund Contract Laboratory Service.
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s iCAP 6000 Series ICP is the ideal tool for this type of analysis and is complimented for lower level work and cleaner samples with the XSeriesII ICP-MS and its CLP Productivity Pack. See our CLP application note for further details.
